Public Service Announcement for Waterbury Marijuana Consumers: Stay Safe and Protect Yourself

Attention Waterbury residents and recreational marijuana smokers: Recent reports of fentanyl-contaminated marijuana products are raising serious concerns. In August 2024, police raided an unlicensed smoke shop in Norwalk and discovered marijuana products laced with fentanyl. The shop was operating without proper licenses, and many of its products tested positive for this dangerous substance. Authorities have arrested a 21-year-old individual in connection with the sale of these contaminated products.

While these incidents are isolated, they highlight the serious risks of purchasing marijuana from unregulated sources. Fentanyl, a potent opioid, can be deadly, even in small amounts, and poses significant dangers if unknowingly consumed.

To reduce your risk, only purchase marijuana from licensed, reputable dispensaries that adhere to strict safety and quality standards. These licensed businesses are your best assurance that products are tested for contaminants, including fentanyl.

Additionally, learn the signs of an opioid overdose, such as confusion, drowsiness, and slow breathing. In case of an emergency, having naloxone (Narcan) on hand can save lives by reversing opioid overdoses.

Stay safe, stay informed, and make responsible choices. Together, we can ensure that our community remains healthy and protected.
