29-Year-Old Woman Dies in Waterbury Police Custody; Investigation Underway

WATERBURY, Conn. – A 29-year-old woman, Alyssa Insogna, died while in custody at the Waterbury Police Department on May 10, prompting an investigation by the Office of the Inspector General.

Insogna was arrested on May 9 near an abandoned house on Willow Street. During a search, police reportedly found multiple folds of heroin and fentanyl in her possession. She also had outstanding warrants and was unable to post bond, with a court appearance scheduled for May 12.

According to the Inspector General’s report, Insogna was observed awake in her cell at 9:15 a.m. on May 10. By noon, she appeared to be sleeping, and at 2:23 p.m., she was found unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at 2:53 p.m.

What Happened to Alyssa?

An autopsy was conducted on May 11 by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The cause of death is currently listed as undetermined, pending the results of toxicology tests.

The Office of the Inspector General continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Insogna’s death.
