Waterbury, CT — Late Sunday night, a Connecticut State Police cruiser was struck on I-84 westbound near Exit 23 while responding to an earlier crash.
The incident occurred around 10:44 p.m. Both the trooper and the driver of the vehicle that hit the cruiser sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital. Authorities have not disclosed whether the trooper was inside the cruiser at the time of the collision.
The crash resulted in damage to a guardrail, prompting notification to the state Department of Transportation. Both vehicles involved were towed from the scene. As of Monday morning, the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
This incident follows a separate fatal crash that occurred three weeks prior on the I-84 eastbound Exit 23 on-ramp in Waterbury. In that case, a 2009 Honda Odyssey veered off the ramp, struck a metal guardrail, crossed the Hamilton Avenue intersection, and collided with a concrete barrier. The driver, identified as 54-year-old Everaldo Ferreira De Oliveira of Waterbury, suffered fatal injuries.
Connecticut State Police urge anyone with information about either incident to contact Trooper Jack Goncalves Jr. at 203-267-2200 or via email at jack.goncalves@ct.gov.
