Waterbury-As Waterbury students head back to school this fall, it’s time for the entire community to brush up on safety — especially when it comes to school buses and children at bus stops.

Each morning and afternoon, school buses hit the roads, carrying our most precious cargo. With school back in session, it’s critical for drivers, parents, and students alike to do their part in keeping our neighborhoods safe.

For Drivers: Slow Down and Stay Alert

School buses make frequent stops, and children can be unpredictable when getting on or off. Here’s what drivers need to remember:

  • Stop for the Stop Sign: Connecticut law requires all vehicles to stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop sign extended — whether you’re behind the bus or approaching from the opposite direction on most roads.
  • Watch for Children: Kids may dart out unexpectedly, especially in residential areas or near bus stops. Always slow down in school zones and neighborhoods.
  • Obey School Zone Speeds: Speed limits in school zones are lower for a reason. Stick to them — and be extra cautious during pick-up and drop-off hours.
  • Never Pass a Bus on the Right: It’s illegal — and dangerous.

For Parents: Teach and Model Safe Behavior

Whether your child walks to the bus stop or you wait with them, safety begins at home.

  • Be Early: Arriving at the bus stop at least five minutes early reduces the chance of rushing and accidents.
  • Stay Visible: Choose bright or reflective clothing, especially during early morning hours or on overcast days.
  • Wait Safely: Children should stand back from the curb and avoid horseplay while waiting for the bus.
  • Review Bus Safety Rules: Teach kids to wait for the bus to stop completely, make eye contact with the driver, and always cross in front of the bus — never behind it.

For Students: Be Bus-Smart

Riding the bus is safe — but only if kids follow the rules:

  • Sit Down, Buckle Up (if belts are provided): Stay seated while the bus is moving and avoid distractions that could affect the driver.
  • Keep Aisles Clear: Backpacks and belongings should be stowed properly to avoid tripping hazards.
  • Follow the Driver’s Instructions: The driver’s priority is getting everyone to and from school safely. Listening and showing respect helps everyone.

As Waterbury schools reopen, let’s work together to ensure every child has a safe journey — from home to school and back again. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Let’s make this school year the safest one yet.
