Waterbury — A 17-year-old student was taken into custody Friday morning after allegedly bringing a firearm to Waterbury Career Academy.

The situation unfolded after other students alerted staff that the teen may have had the weapon since Thursday. The school was placed in a temporary shelter-in-place while police worked to identify and locate the individual.

Officers quickly responded and detained the student without incident. The firearm was recovered, and the school returned to normal operations soon after.

Parents were notified of the situation through an official message later in the morning.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
