Waterbury-The WCA Spartans’ 20205 football season has come to a close after a tough quarterfinal loss to powerhouse St. Joseph, but the journey to get there told the story of one of the most resilient and electrifying teams in Waterbury.

WCA Lost 37-0 to STJ last night

The Spartans finished the season 7–4, delivering signature wins, dramatic finishes, and a level of competitiveness that further cements WCA as one of the city’s rising athletic programs.

A Strong Start: Setting the Tone

WCA opened the season on the road and immediately made noise with back-to-back decisive wins:

  • W 12–6 at Stonington (9/12)
  • W 34–6 at Crosby (9/20)

The Spartans’ defense came out dominant, allowing just 12 points across the first two contests.

They followed that with one of the program’s biggest wins yet:

  • W 28–25 vs. Ansonia (9/27) — a statement victory over a perennial state contender.

Midseason Momentum & Signature Moments

WCA kept rolling into October:

  • W 47–19 vs. Kennedy (10/3)
  • W 20–17 (OT) at Naugatuck (10/10) — an instant-classic battle, where the Spartans showed championship-level poise on the road.

After a bye week, they continued their dominance:

  • W 34–0 at St. Paul (10/25)

At 6–0 in the NVL, WCA sat among the league’s elite and looked poised for a deep postseason run.

The Late-Season Gauntlet

The Spartans then entered their toughest stretch of the year, facing three playoff-caliber opponents in a row.

Despite fighting to the final whistle, WCA suffered three straight narrow defeats:

  • L 19–15 vs. Holy Cross (10/31)
  • L 16–12 vs. GNHHS CO-OP (11/8)
  • L 25–24 at Seymour (11/14)

Each game was within a single score — a testament to how competitive and battle-tested this group became.

Thanksgiving Redemption

The Spartans ended the regular season on a high note:

  • W 40–0 vs. Wilby (11/25)

A dominant performance that secured their postseason berth and restored momentum heading into states.

State Quarterfinals: A Tough End to a Strong Campaign

Traveling to St. Joseph on December 3rd, WCA ran into one of the strongest programs in Connecticut:

  • L 37–0 at St. Joseph (12/3)

The Spartans fought hard, but St. Joseph’s depth and execution proved too much. Still, the appearance marked another step forward for WCA — a young program now consistently competing on the state stage.

A Season to Build On

The 2024 season showcased:

  • top-tier defense that kept WCA in every major game.
  • Breakthrough victories over Ansonia, Naugatuck, and multiple NVL rivals.
  • Resilience through adversity in one of the toughest November stretches in the state.
  • playoff berth that adds to the growing legacy of the Spartans’ football program.

WCA has firmly established itself as a rising force not just in Waterbury, but statewide. With the foundation built this year, the future of Spartans football is bright.
