Waterbury- The Wilby Wildcats took the floor last night at the Bucks Hill Complex for their home scrimmage opener against Nonnewaug — their first true test since securing the Summer League Championship. With that trophy now firmly in the rearview, the focus has shifted to bigger goals: an NVL title and a Division III State Championship run.

Scrimmage rules meant the score reset each quarter, and while no official final score was kept, Wilby made their presence felt early. The Wildcats captured the first three quarters with energy, defense, and tempo. Nonnewaug bounced back to win the fourth and the final 10-minute running clock segment — but even that stretch produced fireworks. In a regulation setting, this would have been an instant classic. Nonnewaug drilled a three while being fouled, a potential four-point play that would’ve cut the game to a one-possession thriller with only seconds to go.

But what truly stood out wasn’t the scoreboard — it was Wilby’s identity.

The Wildcats unleashed a tenacious full-court trap that rattled Nonnewaug for long stretches. At one point, the defensive pressure created three straight steals leading to eight unanswered points, capped by a missed alley-oop attempt that proved one thing: these Cats have bounce.

Offensively, Wilby flashed multiple layers. Deep threes fell with confidence. Mid-range pull-ups hit rhythm. And if the Wildcats can establish consistent inside scoring to balance the attack, they’ll be in every game they play this season.

16 Team NVL League

Fans won’t have to wait long for the real action. Wilby returns to the court Tuesday, December 16th, when the defending NVL champions come to the Bucks Hill Complex for the official 2025–26 season opener.

The Summer League title was step one. Now the hunt for regular season hardware begins.

Tonight, we shift across town as Holy Cross hosts Ludlowe in another early-season matchup with plenty of intrigue. The Crusaders look to set the tone on their home floor, and we’ll be courtside bringing you full coverage.
