WATERBURY, CT — Despite the chill in the air, the warmth of community filled West Main Street on Christmas Eve as families gathered at Meadow Street Automotive for one of Waterbury’s most beloved holiday traditions.

From mid-morning through early afternoon, residents bundled in coats and hats lined up outside 299 West Main Street, where Santa Claus and live reindeer greeted children with wide eyes and even wider smiles. Hot cocoa steamed in cups, ice cream was handed out, and laughter echoed across the lot as parents snapped photos and neighbors caught up.

Now in its 22nd year, the annual Christmas Eve celebration has become a fixture in Waterbury — and this year was no different. The event, hosted by local business owner Ken DeFloria Jr., once again turned Meadow Street Automotive into what many families jokingly call the “North Pole of Waterbury.”

On a crisp, clear day, the turnout reflected how deeply rooted the tradition has become. Families came not just for Santa or the reindeer, but for the feeling — a reminder of small-city connections and holiday generosity that doesn’t ask for anything in return.

Children waited patiently to meet Santa, some shy, others bursting with excitement. Parents chatted nearby, grateful for a moment of joy and normalcy during the holiday rush. No tickets, no purchases — just community.

“What started years ago as a simple way to give back has grown into something the city looks forward to every Christmas Eve,” DeFloria said. And judging by the crowd braving the cold, that sentiment was shared by many in attendance.

With the help of family, friends, and staff, Meadow Street Automotive once again delivered a moment of magic — proving that even on a chilly December day, Waterbury shows up for its own.

As the afternoon wrapped up and families headed off to continue their holiday plans, one thing was clear: traditions like this don’t just mark the season — they help define the city.
