WATERBURY, CT – The City of Waterbury Water Department will resume work on the Thomaston Avenue water main early Monday, December 29, 2025, to complete permanent repairs following the major water main failure earlier this month.

Waterbury Water Main Break Crisis: Everything You Need to Know About Boiling Water

The December break, one of the city’s most significant infrastructure failures in decades, affected a 36-inch transmission main, disrupting water service to approximately 115,000 residents. Emergency repairs restored water flow, but permanent work is now required to fully secure the main.

Crews will repair both the 36-inch high-pressure line and the 36-inch low-pressure gravity line near Sprague Elementary School. A short, controlled shutdown of the low-pressure main will be required to install a line stop valve, though residents are not expected to lose water service during this work. Contingency plans are in place to restore service immediately if any issues arise.

Repairs will begin at 1:00 AM, a time chosen to minimize disruption and take advantage of the school winter break. Once completed, roadway restoration is expected to take about 10 additional days, weather permitting.

Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Jr., praised the efforts of Water Department crews:

“This failure placed an extraordinary strain on our water system and on our residents. Our crews have worked around the clock to restore water safely and now to complete the necessary repairs. We appreciate the continued patience of our community.”
