The City of Waterbury Mayor’s Office has officially vetoed the three-year contract for Dr. Verna Ruffin, which the Board of Education approved last month in a 9–1 vote.
Mayor Pernerewski has stated he supports a one-year contract, citing concerns over Dr. Ruffin’s recent performance record.
But this is far from over.
The Waterbury Board of Education will now have another opportunity to vote. Under city rules, the BOE needs seven votes to override the veto and grant Dr. Ruffin her contract extension.
