State police arrested 35-year-old Shala Lovett of Waterbury. She was charged with assault in the first degree and breach of peace in the second degree.

State police arrested 35-year-old Shala Lovett of Waterbury. She was charged with assault in the first degree and breach of peace in the second degree.

Moments before 9:30 p.m., a state trooper witnessed and approached two vehicles parked on a dangerous section of I-84 West in Waterbury. State police say the vehicles were in the area of exit 23 when the trooper observed two adults, a man and a woman, engaging in a physical altercation.

As the trooper proceeded toward the adults, they saw the man fall to the ground after being struck in the face by the woman.

The man sustained a large slash to the face, but his injuries were deemed non-life threatening and he was transported to St. MARY Hospital.

According to state police, the assault weapon was a pocketknife, which Lovett immediately dropped when instructed to do so. It took two troopers to place her in handcuffs due to her being uncooperative and resisting arrest.
