City of Waterbury Hiring: Traffic Maintenance Person

Starting Pay: $17.90/hr
Range: $17.90 – $25.60/hr
Schedule: 40 hrs/week • Non-exempt • Paid weekly
Note: New hires start at the beginning of the pay range.

The City of Waterbury has opened an Open Competitive Examination for the position of Traffic Maintenance Person, a critical role in keeping the city’s roadways safe, visible, and operating smoothly.

Job Overview — Examples of Work

This is hands-on, skilled work supporting Waterbury’s traffic safety systems. Duties include:

  • Fabricating and installing traffic signs
  • Applying decals and reflectorized materials
  • Setting up, maintaining, and breaking down work-zone traffic controls under CT DOT standards
  • Managing inventory for signs, supplies, pavement markings, and related equipment
  • Using the Asset Management System to document conditions, locations, and maintenance activities
  • Preparing sketches, notes, and layouts for work orders
  • Responding to emergencies involving malfunctioning traffic control equipment
  • Assisting with signal repairs, crosswalk layouts, pavement markings, arrows, and traffic patterns
  • Working with outside contractors
  • Responding to citizen complaints via the city work-order system
  • Operating drills, saws, compressors, post drivers, grinding equipment, hydraulic units, and utility trucks
  • Clearing brush around signs for visibility
  • Snow removal, special event traffic operations, and 24-hour emergency responses
  • Supporting winter highway operations (including snow plowing)

This position requires physical work, quick response during emergencies, and strong attention to detail.
