WATERBURY, CT — After water-related delays postponed the start of the season, the Wilby Wildcats boys basketball team opened the year with a strong showing Saturday afternoon , pulling away late to defeat St. Paul Catholic, 68–59.

St. Paul battled throughout and kept the game competitive into the fourth quarter, but Wilby’s late-game execution and defensive pressure proved to be the difference as the Wildcats closed out the win.

The victory gives Wilby a 1–0 start, an important early result following an extended layoff caused by infrastructure-related delays across the city.

Next up, the Wildcats head to the Bucks Hill Complex for a high-profile crosstown matchup, hosting the 2–1 Kennedy Eagles Monday night in a game that carries NVL and state tournament implications.
