WATERBURY — Community members are urging parents and young people to be aware of the dangers connected to the so-called “Benadryl Challenge” following reports that a Waterbury teenager has died in connection with the dangerous online trend.
The “Benadryl Challenge” involves individuals taking excessive amounts of Benadryl, an over-the-counter allergy medication containing diphenhydramine, in an attempt to create hallucinations or reactions for social media content.
Medical professionals and poison control centers have repeatedly warned that abusing the medication can lead to serious health complications, including:
- seizures,
- dangerous heart issues,
- confusion,
- unconsciousness,
- and death.
The trend gained national attention after multiple incidents involving teenagers across the country were linked to excessive misuse of the medication.
While many social media challenges may appear harmless online, health experts warn that dangerous trends can spread rapidly among young people through peer pressure, viral content, and online attention culture.
Community leaders are encouraging parents and guardians to speak openly with their children about:
- social media influence,
- medication safety,
- peer pressure,
- and the real-life consequences of risky online behavior.
Residents are also being reminded that over-the-counter medications can be extremely dangerous when not taken as directed.
If someone is believed to have taken too much medication or is experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 immediately or contact poison control.
As Waterbury mourns the reported loss of another young life, many in the community are calling for increased awareness, education, and conversations surrounding online trends and youth safety.
The Waterbury Times extends condolences to the family, friends, classmates, and loved ones affected by this tragedy.
