PriceRite Parent Company Responds to Concerns Over Waterbury Employee

Wakefern Food Corp., the parent company of PriceRite, has responded to questions from The Waterbury Times regarding concerns raised about an employee at the newly opened Waterbury location.

WATERBURY — PriceRite’s parent company, Wakefern Food Corp., has responded to questions from The Waterbury Times regarding concerns raised about an assistant manager at the newly opened Waterbury location and the company’s hiring practices.

In a statement provided to The Waterbury Times, Wakefern said it could not comment on personnel matters but emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe, respectful, and legally compliant workplace.

“The nature of the crime 24 years ago was serious and deeply troubling, and this individual served the sentence imposed by the court,” the company stated. “At the same time, as an employer we must recognize that when an individual has taken responsibility for their actions that occurred many years ago, and has served their sentence, they should not be discriminated against and should be provided with a second chance to become a contributing member of the community.”

Wakefern also addressed concerns raised by individuals regarding the employee.

“We understand that some people have expressed concerns, and we take those concerns seriously and are addressing them,” the company said.

The company added that it has received reports of harassment and threats of violence directed toward both the employee and the store.

“These threats are unacceptable, and those who engage in such conduct may violate the law,” Wakefern stated.

The Waterbury Times initially contacted PriceRite after receiving concerns from individuals regarding the employee’s history and questions about company hiring practices. The newsroom sought comment from corporate officials to provide the company an opportunity to respond.

Wakefern stated that it remains committed to maintaining a safe workplace for employees, customers, and the communities it serves.
