Held each year across the country, National Night Out provides an opportunity for police officers and residents to meet in a relaxed setting, away from emergency calls and daily challenges, creating space for conversation, connection, and understanding.

WATERBURY, CT — The sounds of children playing, families gathering, and neighbors connecting filled Waterbury Police Activity League (PAL) Tuesday evening as residents and members of the Waterbury Police Department came together for National Night Out — an annual event focused on strengthening relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
For the Waterbury Police Department, the event represents an important part of community engagement efforts throughout the year.
The Waterbury Times spoke with newly appointed Deputy Chief of Police Nadine Amatruda, along with the department’s Public Information Officer, who highlighted the importance of events like National Night Out and the opportunity they provide for officers to interact with residents on a personal level.

They explained that nights like this are among the moments officers look forward to each year — a chance to step outside their daily roles, meet families, and continue building relationships throughout the city.
Throughout the evening, officers, residents, and community partners gathered at PAL for activities, conversations, food, and family-friendly entertainment. Children had the opportunity to interact with officers, explore police vehicles, and see another side of the people who serve their neighborhoods every day.
National Night Out is built around the idea that public safety is strongest when police and residents work together. Community trust is developed over time through consistent communication, shared experiences, and opportunities for residents and officers to connect before a crisis occurs.
Events hosted through organizations like Waterbury PAL play an important role in creating those connections, particularly with young residents who are able to interact with officers in a positive environment.
For families attending Tuesday night’s event, National Night Out was not only an evening of activities and entertainment — it was an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the people who live in Waterbury and those who serve the city.
As the city continues to grow and face new challenges, events like National Night Out serve as a reminder that community partnerships remain an important part of keeping neighborhoods connected.
