WATERBURY, CT — Waterbury Police have identified and arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred late last month on Reidville Drive.

Waterbury Woman Killed in Pedestrian Hit-and-Run on Reidville Drive
Police say Dion Schontten, 23, of Waterbury, has been identified as the driver involved in the Dec. 28, 2025 crash that killed Sabrina Starkey, 43, of Waterbury.
According to investigators, the Waterbury Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) determined there was probable cause to believe Schontten was operating the vehicle that struck Starkey and fled the scene. A warrant was subsequently secured for his arrest.
On Jan. 7, 2026, crash investigators located Schontten at a scheduled probation appointment, where he was taken into custody without incident.
Schontten is facing the following charges:
- Evading Responsibility Resulting in Death
- Tampering with Physical Evidence
- Misconduct with a Motor Vehicle
- Illegal Operation of a Motor Vehicle Under Suspension
He was presented in court Thursday morning and is being held on a $100,000 bond.

Police first responded to the area of 410 Reidville Drive at approximately 9:14 p.m. on Dec. 28 following reports of a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian.
Upon arrival, officers found a pedestrian lying in the roadway suffering from facial trauma. The vehicle involved and its operator were not present at the scene. The victim was later identified as Sabrina Starkey.
Starkey was transported to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Authorities emphasized that the case remains an active and open investigation, which continues to be handled by the department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit.
