WATERBURY, CT — A 25-year-old Waterbury man with a history involving stolen firearms and motor vehicles is facing multiple charges following a coordinated compliance check involving several law enforcement units.

On March 30, 2026, officers from the Waterbury Police Department—including the Gang Task Force, Vice and Intelligence Unit, Crime Prevention Unit, and Auto Theft Task Force—assisted probation officers in conducting a compliance check on Juannel Herrera.

During the investigation, authorities reported seizing:

  • Ammunition
  • A high-capacity magazine
  • Springfield Hellcat 9mm handgun

Police said the firearm had been reported stolen out of Bellows Falls, Vermont.

Herrera, a convicted felon, is legally prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.

He has been charged with:

  • Theft of a firearm
  • Illegal sale or transfer of a firearm
  • Failure to properly store firearms
  • Criminal possession of pistols and/or revolvers
  • Criminal possession of firearms or ammunition
  • Illegal possession of a high-capacity magazine (two counts)

Officials stated the operation reflects ongoing collaboration between local law enforcement and probation officers aimed at enhancing public safety.

“The Waterbury Police Department remains committed to working with our local partners to ensure the safety of our community,” the department said in a statement.

At The Waterbury Times, removing illegal firearms from the streets isn’t just a talking point—it’s a measurable priority.

Cases like this highlight the ongoing reality: individuals legally prohibited from possessing weapons continue to find access to them, often through illegal channels that stretch beyond city lines. The recovery of a stolen firearm in this case underscores how interconnected these issues are, and why enforcement efforts can’t operate in silos.

The Waterbury Police Department plays a critical role, but the broader challenge remains—tracking, interrupting, and ultimately shutting down the pipelines that put illegal guns into the hands of repeat offenders.

Until that system is consistently disrupted, these cases won’t be the exception—they’ll be the pattern.
