Waterbury — Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski Jr. will deliver the city’s 2026 State of the City Address on Thursday, May 14, during the annual mayoral luncheon hosted by the Waterbury Regional Chamber at La Bella Vista.

The luncheon, scheduled from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., will bring together business leaders, elected officials, community stakeholders, and residents for an overview of the city’s accomplishments, ongoing projects, and future priorities.

According to the Mayor’s Office, the address will focus heavily on economic development, infrastructure investment, public safety, education, housing, healthcare, and fiscal management.

“This year’s State of the City reflects a community that continues moving forward with purpose and momentum,” Mayor Pernerewski said in a statement. “We are seeing measurable progress across nearly every sector, from economic development and housing investment to public safety, education, and infrastructure.”

Among the major projects expected to be highlighted are redevelopment efforts along Freight Street, planning surrounding the former Anamet property, the construction of the new Amazon fulfillment center, and several downtown revitalization projects including the Chase Building, Exchange Place Courtyard, and multiple housing conversion developments.

Infrastructure improvements are also expected to be a major focus of the speech, particularly the city’s nearly $32 million investment into water system upgrades following transmission main failures and recent hydrant flow concerns. Additional updates are expected on roadway and sidewalk projects, downtown parking modernization efforts, and improvements to public facilities.

The Mayor is also expected to discuss continued staffing growth within the Waterbury Police Department and modernization efforts involving the Waterbury Fire Department.

Education initiatives will also be addressed, including progress within Waterbury Public Schools, the expansion of the Waterbury Promise scholarship program, and partnerships with institutions such as UConn Waterbury, Post University, and CT State Community College Naugatuck Valley.

The administration will also emphasize the city’s continued fiscal stability, including the reaffirmation of Waterbury’s AA bond rating with a stable outlook, growth of the city’s taxable grand list beyond $7 billion, and proposed revisions to the FY2027 budget after securing an additional $23 million in state aid through collaboration with Governor Ned Lamont and Waterbury’s legislative delegation.

“Our administration remains committed to responsible growth, fiscal discipline, and making strategic investments that improve quality of life for residents while positioning Waterbury for long-term success,” Pernerewski said.
