Waterbury- A campaign attack intended to define the Republican primary race for Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District may have created a new challenge for Chris Shea: convincing voters that the race should be about his opponent’s past rather than his own vision for the future.

The Shea campaign recently released a sharply worded “Urgent Primary Election Update” targeting Republican challenger Jonathan De Barros, highlighting De Barros’ criminal conviction, 19 years in prison for manslaughter, and subsequent pardon.

The message was clear: Shea argued that De Barros’ history should disqualify him from representing Republicans in Congress.

But the response from voters in the comment section of Shea’s own Facebook post revealed a more complicated picture.

While Shea supporters defended the message and praised the candidate, several commenters questioned whether attacking De Barros’ past was the right strategy — and whether it could ultimately benefit his opponent.

One commenter responded:

“I don’t care what someone did 30 years ago. I care about the person that they are today.”

Another wrote:

“If your campaign is built on attacking your opponent instead of explaining your own plan, you’ve already told voters everything they need to know.”

That commenter continued that voters deserve “solutions — not 30-second smear ads,” arguing the focus should be on issues such as jobs, affordability, and infrastructure.

The criticism was notable because it appeared directly beneath Shea’s own campaign post, meaning the debate was happening among voters Shea is attempting to persuade.

Others suggested De Barros’ personal story could resonate with voters who believe in rehabilitation and second chances.

One commenter wrote:

“Character assassination is for leftists. Conservatives should be focused on policy solutions & issues.”

Another said:

“I’ve seen Jahana debate. She’s vicious, quick, competent. I think Jonathan will be able to handle her better than Chris can.”

The reaction highlights a difficult calculation in political campaigns: negative advertising can strengthen support among a candidate’s base, but it can also create a contrast that allows the targeted candidate to shift the conversation toward redemption, personal growth, and second chances.

For De Barros, his criminal history is not new information. It has been a central issue since entering the race. His campaign has argued that he has served his sentence, rebuilt his life, and should be judged on who he is today.

For Shea, the question now becomes whether voters view the attack as a necessary examination of character — or whether they see it as an attempt to define an opponent through his worst moment.

With early voting beginning August 3 and the Republican primary scheduled for August 11, the final days of the race may come down to a fundamental question:

Will Republican voters prioritize a candidate’s past, or the candidate they believe can win and lead in the future?

The comments on Shea’s own campaign page suggest that question remains unsettled.
