Funds secured. Contract approved. Now residents are asking: When does construction actually begin?

WATERBURY — The City of Waterbury has taken the necessary steps to move forward with the reconstruction of the Wilby High School football field, but months after funding was secured and a professional services agreement was approved, the community still does not have a clear answer to one question:

When will this project begin?

The Waterbury Board of Aldermen approved a $223,790 professional services agreement with BSC Group for design services related to the Wilby High School Football Field Reconstruction Project.

The contract followed a competitive bidding process through RFP #8744, with BSC Group ultimately selected after review by a committee made up of city officials, Waterbury Public Schools leadership, and representatives from the Waterbury Development Corporation.

The project appeared to have reached a major milestone: funding was secured, a design firm was selected, and the Board of Aldermen provided approval.

But residents, athletes, and members of the Wilby community say they have yet to see any visible progress or receive a public timeline for when work will begin.

At this point, the city has not publicly announced:

• When the design phase will be completed
• When construction is expected to start
• When the renovated field will be available for Wilby athletics and community use

For a school community that has been waiting for improvements to its athletic facilities, the lack of a timeline has created frustration.

The question being asked is simple:

If the funding is in place, the contract has been approved, and the project team has been selected — what is the next step, and when will the work actually begin?
