The Waterbury Times|Sept 22, 2026
Waterbury- Nearly one year ago, The Waterbury Times asked a simple question:
If TikTok stayed in the United States, how would it change?
At the time, the future of one of the world’s most popular social media platforms remained uncertain. There were questions about whether TikTok would continue operating in America, whether a U.S. company would acquire it, and what the future would look like for the millions of users, creators, and businesses that relied on the platform.
Now, with more clarity, we can revisit that question.
The short answer: TikTok remained. But the ownership story was different than many expected.
“TIK-FOX”? WE CAN KEEP TIKTOK, BUT WILL IT STAY THE SAME?
No, Fox Did Not Buy TikTok
When discussions about a possible TikTok sale dominated headlines, there was speculation about several potential buyers and partners, including interest connected to major media companies.
But Fox did not purchase TikTok.
The platform was not absorbed into Fox, and the familiar TikTok app continued operating for American users.
Instead, TikTok’s U.S. operations moved toward a new ownership structure involving American investors and technology companies while ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, maintained a stake.
So What Actually Changed?
For the average TikTok user, the biggest surprise may be that very little changed on the surface.
The app still looks and works much like it did before.
People still scroll through videos, creators still build audiences, and businesses still use TikTok to reach customers.
But behind the scenes, the questions surrounding ownership, security, data management, and control of the platform became the center of attention.
The debate was never just about an app.
It was about who controls one of the most influential communication platforms in the world.
The Platform That Changed How We Share Stories
Regardless of ownership questions, TikTok has changed the way people consume information.
A restaurant can become a destination overnight because of one video. A local musician can find an audience without a record label. A small business can compete for attention alongside major brands.
Even local journalism has felt that impact.
For community news organizations, platforms like TikTok have created another way to share important information, highlight local voices, and reach audiences who may not traditionally visit a news website.
The way people discover stories has changed.
Looking Back at Our Original Question
When The Waterbury Times first examined TikTok’s future, the question was whether the platform would survive and what it would become.
A year later, the answer is clearer.
TikTok survived.
Fox did not become the owner.
And while users may not have noticed a dramatic change in their daily experience, the company behind the platform went through a major transformation.
Technology moves quickly. Ownership battles come and go. But the influence of platforms like TikTok remains.
The next question is not whether TikTok changed.
It already has.
The next question is how TikTok — and the millions of people who use it — will continue to evolve.
