Waterbury Woman Arrested in Fatal Moped Hit-and-Run

Waterbury- A 47-year-old Waterbury woman has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a moped operator in July, according to Waterbury police.

Police said officers responded to the intersection of Meriden Road and Southmayd Road at approximately 2:07 a.m. on July 25, 2026, following reports of a serious hit-and-run involving a moped.

Responding officers found a moped down in the roadway and no other vehicles at the scene. Luis Santana, 27, of Waterbury, was found on the ground suffering from severe injuries.

Santana, who was operating the moped, was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Arrest and charges

According to police, crash investigators continued working on the case and eventually identified Ayesha Abdul-Lateef, 47, of Waterbury, as a suspect.

An arrest warrant was obtained, and Abdul-Lateef was taken into custody on October 7.

She was charged with evading responsibility resulting in death and failure to yield while turning left.

Police said Abdul-Lateef was held on a $100,000 bond and presented in court at 9 a.m. on October 8, 2026.
