Jonathan DeBarros Addresses Waterbury Republican Town Committee, Momentum Builds for 5th District Race

WATERBURY, CT — Jonathan DeBarros, community leader, youth mentor, and lifelong Connecticut resident, spoke to the Waterbury Republican Town Committee this week, continuing to build momentum as he seeks to represent the 5th Congressional District and challenge incumbent Congresswoman Jahana Hayes.

DeBarros shared his personal story of resilience and service. Wrongfully incarcerated for 19 years, he was later granted a full pardon by Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont. Since returning home, he has dedicated himself to mentoring at-risk youth through the Phoenix Youth Foundation, earned his Electrical Technician certification, and worked to maintain critical infrastructure for the state and local communities.

Grounded in faith, family, and personal responsibility, DeBarros emphasized his commitment to safer communities, economic opportunity, and ensuring the system works for everyday residents, not just the powerful.

“Every part of my life has prepared me to serve the people of Connecticut’s 5th District,” DeBarros told the assembled members. “I am ready to fight for a system that truly works for you.”

As the campaign develops, local Republicans see DeBarros’ personal story and track record of service as key factors that could energize voters and challenge the Democratic stronghold in the district.

Dawn Maiorano Steps Down as Waterbury Republican Town Committee Chair

The Waterbury Times|Published Mar 18, 2026

WATERBURY, CT — After years of service, Dawn Maiorano officially stepped down as chair of the Waterbury Republican Town Committee, leaving the role in the hands of incoming chair Allen Leon.

At the meeting, Maiorano gave an emotional farewell, thanking members for their support and reflecting on her time leading the committee. “I am so proud and grateful to have served with each of you. Together, we’ve laid the foundation to make history in the next two years and change the course of Waterbury as we know it,” she said.

Maiorano’s impact on the community extends beyond politics. She has been active on the campaign trail, hosted a local radio show, and supported community initiatives such as donations to the adopted spot—a program highlighted by local media.

Her departure marks a turning point for the committee as Allen Leon assumes leadership, and speculation grows about her potential return in 2027 for a mayoral run.
